Rabbi/Cantor Mark Perman is excited to be the new spiritual leader at B’er Chayim Congregation in Cumberland effective July 1st 2016.  Most recently, he served as cantor at Congregation Emanu El in Houston, Texas. Rabbi Perman has set his sights on building a sacred community here in Cumberland where prayer, study, and g’milut chasadim (acts of love and kindness), are intertwined in order to bring our covenant with God to life.  Though he has served several congregations as cantor, he has always been interested in teaching, in guiding the congregation with music as well as ideas, and in connecting our sacred mission with the goal of improving the troubled world in which we live. Rabbi Perman received his rabbinic ordination in 2013 from The Mesifta Academy in Queens, New York ( Rabbi Charles Agin, Dean), and his investiture as cantor in 1997 from HUC-JIR’s School of Sacred Music in New York City. He has also performed extensively on stage and in individual cabaret performances called: “Bima to Broadway”.  Mark is a graduate of New York University and The High School of Performing Arts in NYC.  Most recently he also hosted a radio show called “Perspectives” on a prominent talk radio station in Houston. He is looking forward to the years ahead at B’er Chayim and to beginning his new life here in Cumberland.
